Who Invented Slot Games? The Man Behind the Liberty Bell

Charles August Fey, a Bavarian-born American mechanic, invented the first true slot machine in the modern sense. He built his first coin-operated gambling machine in 1894 while working in San Francisco. This invention launched the entire slot machine industry and changed casino gaming forever.

In 1884, Fey was a mechanic in San Francisco who started building coin-operated gambling machines. The next year, he created the 4-11-44 machine in his basement, which became so successful at a local saloon that he quit his job and opened a factory. This machine proved that people loved automatic gambling devices, setting the stage for his bigger inventions.

Fey’s most famous invention was the Liberty Bell slot machine created in 1898. This machine had three spinning reels with a single pay line and paid out automatically when three bells lined up, giving players a 50-cent win. The Liberty Bell became the most popular slot machine of its day and introduced the familiar three-reel design we still see today.

Before Fey, there were earlier gambling machines that weren’t true slots. In 1891, Sittman and Pitt in New York created a machine with five drums holding 50 playing cards, but it could not pay out coins automatically. These were card-based machines without spinning reels or automatic cash rewards, so they don’t count as real slot machines.

After Fey’s invention, the slot machine industry grew quickly. In 1907, Herbert Mills made the Operator Bell based on Fey’s Liberty Bell design. By 1964, Bally Manufacturing introduced Money Honey, the first electromechanical slot machine. In 1976, Fortune Coin created the first video slot, showing how Fey’s 1894 invention evolved into modern digital slots.

Charles Fey lived from September 9, 1862, to November 10, 1944, and remains famous for inventing the slot machine in San Francisco. His three-reel design with automatic payouts became the standard for all future slot machines. Today, billions of dollars are played on slot machines worldwide, all starting from Fey’s original 1894 invention.
